Identifying concise, concrete, measurable learning outcomes is the first important step in designing coherent instruction and aligned assessments. Effective learning targets are the catalyst for selecting strategies, making learning visible, and creating a flexible student learning sequence. Once identified, a sequence of targets aligned to practice that makes learning visible for formative assessment ensures student learning.

Purpose: This working session includes instructions, provides practice, and models and supports teaching teams as they break content area standards into ordered targets and align active, visible practice that provides formative data.

Focus: Learn and practice a protocol for breaking complex standards into learning targets. Create a sequence of practice activities that also serve as formative assessments.
